Russian and Ukranian languages

How similar are Russian and Ukranian from a structural point of view? Are the similar in the same sense that Spanish and Portuguese are similar (generally the same grammar and language structures, just a different vocabulary and some differences in pronounciation.) Are dates, numbers, cases and gender similar? Or are the differences larger? Such as between Dutch and German, or even broader, such between Spanish and Italian.
