I think you already answered your own question(s).
It also depends where in Russia will you travel and how.
Russia is a great country to visit but if this is your first trip, I advise you to advance more cautious to the matter, maybe also changing the destination.But this is just my personal opinion and is not intended to discourage you from going to Russia.
