General Information

The Faculty of Medicine has a 6-year curriculum for the MD program. The autumn semester of medicine study starts on September 1st and finishes on January 25th; the spring semester starts on February 7th and finishes on June 30th. The FBM MSU curriculum also includes the practical training at a hospital for several weeks in July and August, during the whole period of study.

The Faculty offers international students an MD program taught in Russian (12 semester full-time program). There is also an English program: the first 3 years are taught in English, and last 3 years in Russian and English. During first 3 years the students are taught Russian language, which makes it possible for them to work with the Russian-speaking patients in hospitals from the 4th year of studies.

Short-term programs: short-term programs for international students are available both in English and Russian: clinical and scientific internships at the Faculty and associated institutions chosen by the applicant. The duration of short-term programs can vary from 2 to 10 months. For postgraduate students, FBM MSU offers a special biomedical education under the supervision of MSU specialists. Field training and specialized education are conducted individually and subject to each student’s approval. The Faculty of Basic Medicine constantly organizes international educational schools which last from one to two weeks for people of different ages and professional standards. Also there is a program on semester basis in some subjects included in a curriculum for college students of the USA and Canada.

Moscow University has a long-standing tradition of training physicians. Medical Faculty was opened from the very foundation of the University in 1755. In 1930 it had separated and became the First Moscow Medical Institute (at present time Moscow Medical Academy). The existing Faculty was founded in 1992. This can be valued as a return to the historical traditions of medical education at the University. The first three years of a medical student’s education include instruction in physics, mathematics, statistics, genetics, biology, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, English, computers, electronic information sharing and retrieval. The programme emphasizes “active” instructional techniques as opposed to the “passive” ones, typical of the old fashioned educational system , that centered on the uncritical memorization of lectures and books by “orthodox” experts. Clinical training occurs at the Medical Centre of the Administration of the President of Russian Federation, a leading Moscow hospital that is well equipped and has experienced physicians and medical staff.

Main goals of the Faculty foundation: to train qualified medical specialists according to the Russian governmental standard; to integrate efforts of scientists of various branches for carrying out basic research in medicine; to introduce new methods of diagnostics and treatment of diseases.
