General Information
At the University Geography has been taught for more than 200 years. In 1884 the Department of Geography and Ethnography was created and in 1938 the Faculty of Geography founded. The Faculty of Geography is recognised in the world. About 300 specialists graduate annually. They are qualified in the fields of environment protection, regional aspects of economy, computer mapping, global climate modeling, etc.
Apart from sharing the unique resources of the University’s main campus the Faculty possesses its own facilities for research and study. The research potential of 8 interdisciplinary laboratories is reinforced by 26 departmental laboratories addressing more specific fields of study. Technical support units, such as the map publishing and photo laboratories, graphics design bureau and editorial branch add up to this potential. The Faculty’s Map Library is a major deposit of Russian topographic and thematic maps (over 350,000 sheets). Other major facilities include the University Museum of Earth Science and the campus-based Meteorological Observatory which provides (among other data) a unique set of ultraviolet radiation measurements and is a member of the World Climatic Programme. The Faculty owns 5 permanent fully equipped stations extensively used for specialised research and training: Satino (Kaluga rgn), Krasnovidovo (Moscow rgn), Elbrus (Kabardino-Balkaria), Khibiny (Murmansk rgn), Ust-Yeniseysk (Krasnojarsk rgn).
