General Information

The Faculty of Philology is the oldest University subdivision. Philological disciplines were included in the Moscow University curriculum even as far back as 1755 – the year of the University foundation. Rhetoric, Latin and Russian language were taught to the students of Rhetoric and Poetry Department at the Faculty of Philosophy. In 1756 the University opened its own Gymnasia, Library, Printing House and a book shop. In those years a number of outstanding philologists worked at the University. N.N.Popovskii, A.A.Barsov, P.A.Sokhatskii were among them. As early as 1768, lectures were delivered in Russian.

In 1804 the University opened the Faculty of Language Arts. Students of the Faculty studied according to the individual curriculum. The list of the courses was considerably extended to include History, Theory of Fine Arts, Greek, Latin, the study of languages and literature.

In 1835 the Faculty was transformed into the Department of History and Philology to make part of the Faculty of Philosophy, which in 1863 included the departments of Philosophy, Greek and Roman Linguistics, Comparative Grammar of Indo-European Languages, History of the Russian Language and Literature, History of World Literature, Slavic Philology, World History, History of Russia, History of Church, etc. Some of the students of that period later became famous writers and philosophers: D.I.Fonvizin, A.S.Gribojedov, P.Ya.Chaadajev, M.Ju.Lermontov, V.G.Belinskii, A.I.Gertsen, N.P.Ogarev, I.A.Goncharov.

The Faculty of Philology is a member of the All-European programme for partnership in university education – TEMPUS. The departments of English, Romance and Iberian Romance linguistics handle the project, which intend to promote the collaboration of educational establishments all around Europe by funding joint projects, providing scholarships for students, researchers and teachers. The project involves expanding the teaching resources base, updating the libraries, the acquisition of hi-tech equipment, including self-study facilities and computers.
